Company Profile

Pylon Coatings is an Australian owned and operated family business, established in Sydney in 1950, though the original history of the company dates back to 1871.

From 1871 the Pajor family were making furniture finishes and various paints in Hungary. Over the years the Pajor family has passed down knowledge from generation to generation and continual product development has been a feature of the company’s growth.

In 1950 Frank and Barbara Pajor utilised their experience and became one of the pioneering companies in Australia to make nitrocellulose furniture lacquers. They established Pajor Pty Ltd and manufactured the products in a double garage in Rosebery, Sydney. After a year this backyard business outgrew the Roseberry premises and moved to a small factory in Botany. By 1954 the building in Botany was extended and doubled in size.

In 1959 Barbra and her son Peter Pajor managed the company and employed an extra staff member to assist with the day to day operations. While running the company Peter earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry and completed this degree with honours in 1961. Following this Peter continued studies and completed a Masters of Science in Chemical Technology in 1969. During this time the company was continuing to progress and extra staff were employed to maintain the company’s growth.

An extra building was completed in 1969 on the adjoining land in Botany to create more space for production, storage and offices. Peter and Sue Pajor established Pylon Chemicals Pty Ltd in 1971 and the family celebrated 100 years of company history.

In 1988 the manufacturing plant in Botany was rebuilt due to the incidence of a severe fire. By the early 1990s with a staff of over 20, the business (managed by Peter Pajor) was beginning to gain momentum and distribute in new areas around the country.

In 1995 a certified quality assurance system (ISO 9001) was introduced. This formalised many quality control procedures to ensure a high level of consistency throughout the manufacturing process.

In 2001 Ron and Robyn Pajor continued the family legacy and Pylon Chemicals Pty Ltd became Pylon Coatings Pty Ltd. Headed by Ron, they employed highly experienced staff from within industry who inturn introduced new technologies to the company. Investments in the latest machinery and a focus on continual ways to enhance product performance were the main priority during these early years.

Pylon’s research and development team take advantage of the most up to date raw materials to create innovative coating systems to suit the market.

Technology has improved enormously in areas such as ease of use, durability, colour accuracy, solids content, coverage, gloss retention and general product performance. However, one thing remaining unchanged is the attention to the correct manufacturing process, personal service and high company ethics.

Today, Pylon is available from over 24 outlets throughout Australia and its products are also exported. The company is now one of Australia’s leading suppliers of premium coatings to the furniture and glass industry, and is proud to be 100% Australian owned and made.
